With the start of a new year comes the chance to change some bad habits and reset. In this digital age, it is advised to regularly change and update passwords to protect your privacy and sensitive information, but what makes a strong password?

Avoid using personal information in your passwords that can easily be found on social media profiles, such as names and birthdays. Also avoid using simple things like "password1234". It may seem obvious but you'd be surprised at how many people rely on such simple passwords to secure important information.

A strong password should always contain at least one upper case letter and one number. This makes your password less predictable and easy to guess. Keeping the length between 6 to 10 characters will allow you to remember the password more easily and allows for easier input for example, a simple password like "penguin" can become "Penguin99", "11PenGuiN11" and so on.

It is recommended to keep different passwords for different websites however, it can be difficult to remember and it is best to avoid keeping a record of your passwords, should they end up in the wrong hands. As such, it may be beneficial to keep 3 different passwords and use them for different sites, settling for a compromise.

Finally, if you are the type of person who easily forgets their passwords, try to make them memorable to you but in a way that others wouldn't be able to guess. If necessary, you can always request to have your passwords reset should you forget. For this reason, you should always ensure any security questions are correctly filled in and updated if required.
